Reliable dumpster monitoring
Reference: School District in Ohio is monitoring dumpsters to optimize waste collection
Company description
The customer is a City School District located in Ohio, USA. The School District groups students from an area of 8 towns. This School District commissioned Sensoneo to optimize waste collection and manage their waste bins in 9 locations.
Problem description
The School District has waste dumpsters in 9 different locations. Dumpsters are for general and mixed waste each with a capacity of 8 cubic yards. Management was looking for cost savings and better quality of service from the haulers. Due to safety and health reasons, hauling must be done before the school starts at 9:00 AM as not to disturb and endanger students and school staff on the school property. Dumpster monitoring must provide time and service verification for external and internal purposes.

Remote waste fill-level monitoring
In Spring 2018, we installed smart waste sensors at 9 locations on school district campuses. Sensoneo monitors 8 yard dumpsters that hold about 53 30 gal. bags or 1,800 lbs. of waste.
How does Sensoneo provide service verification?
Sensoneo offers double service verification – data-driven and hardware-driven.
The smart sensor has an accelerometer similar to your phone and it detects a change in position. We must take into account the differences in hauling trucks, bins and the various ways dumpsters are emptied. We update our algorithms regularly to read and detect pickups when bins are flipped and emptied.
The software recognizes data-driven pickups. Sensors send measurements several times a day and software notices a drop in fill-level.
To confirm hardware-driven pickup recognition, the sensor makes an extra measurement right after the pickup to confirm sudden drop in fill-level.
Network is Narrowband IoT
Our sensors run on the Internet of Things network, called NB-IoT. NB-IoT is a low power, wide area network designed for sensors. Benefits of using the NB-IoT network include sensor battery life, low power usage and low data costs.

Smart Waste Management
The data dashboard shows the actual fill-level of all bins monitored by Sensoneo Smart sensors. Here, you will find all the important information related to the specific bins and stands – their address & GPS position, fill-level, volume and type of waste. You can also check the prediction of when the bins are expected to reach full capacity.
Smart Analytics
It is an analytical and reporting tool enabling the waste management company to ”understand” the waste they manage and make data-driven strategic decisions.
The tool helps analyze the pickup frequency/efficiency and the collection routes frequency/efficiency. The tool also enables you to see where you can improve your services or optimize bin/stand capacity to eliminate overflowing bins.
Results
Control
Thanks to the deployment of the Sensoneo solution the school district maintains control over quality of service through service verification.
Route Planning
Thanks to real-time data and fill-level lifecycle predictions the district plans collections efficiently to eliminate the collection of half-empty bins and to prevent overflowing bins.
